12月13日深夜から14日早朝にかけて、代官山 蔦屋書店で「蔦夜書店－代官山 蔦屋書店×SPRING VALLEY BREWERY－」が開催されました。
今回のテーマは、ノルウェー語で「心温まる、素敵な夜」を意味する「コーシェリナット」。閉店後の書店にランタンの灯りがともり、本とクラフトビール、料理をゆったりと楽しむ、特別な一夜となりました。 イベントでは、SPRING VALLEY BREWERY のクラフトビールと料理研究家によるフードペアリング、そして代官山 蔦屋書店コンシェルジュによる「コーシェリな夜」に読みたい本の紹介など、五感で味わう多彩なコンテンツが展開されました。参加者は思い思いに本を手に取り、グラスを傾けながら、静かな「夜の書店時間」を楽しまれていました。
キリンビールと、同社のルーツであるスプリングバレー・ブルワリーを創業したウィリアム・コープランドは、実は深く結びついています。コープランドはノルウェー出身の醸造家で、明治初期の横浜でスプリングバレー・ブルワリーを立ち上げ、日本で初めて継続的に商業用ビールを醸造した「日本ビール産業の祖」とされています。彼の醸造所の跡地にはジャパン・ブルワリーが設立され、そこから「キリンビール」が誕生しました。
そのことから、日本ノルウェー協会副会長のスティアン・フロイスタインと、同協会メンバーの上野青葉が、ノルウェーに関するプレゼンテーションを行いました。プレゼンテーションでは、「コーシェリ」という概念の背景にあるノルウェーの暮らしや価値観、冬の過ごし方、そして自然や食文化とのつながりについて紹介し、今回のイベントテーマとの共通点をわかりやすくお伝えしました。また、ノルウェーと日本をつなぐ意外な「ビールのご縁」についても触れました。
今回コラボレーション相手となった SPRING VALLEY BREWERY は、まさにこの歴史を受け継ぎつつ、新しいクラフトビール文化を提案しているブランドです。代官山という場所で、ノルウェーの「コーシェリ」と、日本のビール文化の礎を築いたノルウェー人・コープランドのストーリー、そしてキリンビールの現在進行形の取り組みが一つにつながるな時間を共有できた夜となりました。
From the late night of December 13th to the early morning of the 14th, Daikanyama Tsutaya Books hosted a special after-hours event, “Tsuyashoten – Daikanyama Tsutaya Books × SPRING VALLEY BREWERY.”
The theme of the night was “koselig natt” – a Norwegian expression meaning “a warm, cozy, wonderful night.” With lanterns softly lighting the space, guests enjoyed books, craft beer, and food in a uniquely relaxing atmosphere after the store had closed to the public.
The program featured craft beers from SPRING VALLEY BREWERY paired with dishes created by a culinary expert, as well as book recommendations by Daikanyama Tsutaya’s literature concierge – titles especially suited for a “cozy winter night.” Participants wandered through the quiet bookstore, beer in hand, taking time to read, talk, and experience the space in a way that is only possible late at night.
During the event, Mr. Stian Froystein, Vice President of the Norway-Japan Society, and Ms. Aoba Ueno gave a presentation about Norway. They introduced the Norwegian concept of koselig (coziness), the lifestyle and values behind it, how people in Norway spend the long winter months, and the links between nature, food culture, and everyday comfort. They also highlighted some surprising connections between Norway and Japan through the history of beer.
One of the key stories they shared was about William Copeland and his close link with Kirin Beer. Copeland, originally from Norway, founded the Spring Valley Brewery in Yokohama in the early Meiji period and is regarded as a pioneer of Japan’s beer industry, having produced the first continuously brewed commercial beer in the country. The site of his brewery later became home to the Japan Brewery Company, which went on to launch Kirin Beer.
Today’s SPRING VALLEY BREWERY brand carries forward this historical legacy while presenting a new style of craft beer culture. In Daikanyama, the Norwegian idea of koselig, the story of a Norwegian brewer who laid the foundation for Japan’s beer industry, and Kirin’s contemporary craft beer initiatives all came together in one memorable night. It was an evening that not only celebrated good beer and good books, but also quietly showcased the deep, and perhaps unexpected, ties between Norway and Japan.
